Integrating vRealize Automation Cloud & vRealize Network Insight Cloud

When you have vRealize Automation in place to deploy applications, vRA is the source of truth when it comes to the application landscape. It makes sense to treat it that way, and not have other products (like vRealize Operations or vRealize Network Insight) have to discover those newly deployed applications on their own. Which is what this post is about!

Before you continue, I’ll not be going too deep into vRA, vRNI, or the Extensibility in vRA that makes this happen and assume you know the basic of those products and features. This post explain how to get your vRA … Read more

vRealize Automation Action – SSH to Servers Post-Deployment

In the VMware CMBU lab, I built something cool that I wanted to share. Creating a demo for vRealize Network Insights featured called Flow-based Application Discovery, I needed to get applications running in the lab to dynamically resize from time to time. In a demo three tiered application; add one or two web or app servers, or remove them. Flow-based application discovery would then detect the change and suggest updating the application in Network Insight.

One of the requirements is that there has to be traffic going between all servers before application discovery picks it up. That’s what led me … Read more

Integrating vRealize Automation with Network Insight

In order to get a complete view of your network traffic flows between applications inside Network Insight, it should know things about your application stacks. This post will go into how to create an integration with vRealize Automation in order to get all new application stacks into Network Insight. This will happen on the moment that an application is deployed from a blueprint, instantly transferring info so every greenfield application will give context in Network Insight.

Disclaimer: This is something I built, it is not officially supported by VMware.

As you may know by now, Network Insight listens … Read more

vRealize Orchestrator Workflow with vRA Event Broker to get Deployment Info

vRealize Orchestrator (vRO) can be a beast. In both in capability and the difficulty in getting exactly the data you want. For a project I’m working on, I wanted to get a list of VMs including tier names, and the deployment name that was deployed from vRealize Automation (vRA). One of the requirement is that I can get this after the entire blueprint has deployed and all at once. Then I want to process this VM list and deployment data, more on that in a future post.

To begin, vRA needs to notify vRO when it has finished deploying a … Read more

vRealize Automation and NSX with App Isolation: Internal error

My colleague Erik Scholten (vRealize specialist) was building a demo environment for a customer this week. In this environment, he wanted to demonstrate vRealize Automation (vRA) in all its glory and have NSX coupled to it so vRA could use NSX to micro-segment rolled out blueprints using the App Isolation option.

NSX is pretty easy to get off the ground for first use, which he did himself with ease. All that’s needed for one to be able to use the distributed firewall to micro-segment, is to deploy NSX Manager, connect it to vCenter and prepare the ESXi hosts. NSX was … Read more
