vCloud Director: Removing Network from a vApp without shutting it down

Caution: this is not supported by VMware. This is ‘this is possible’ post, not a standard procedure. Take care if you go forward.

Within vCloud Director, you can dynamically add networks to vApps and virtual machines, just as within vSphere. Moving the network of a virtual machine from networkA to networkB within vCloud Director is also a non-disruptive operation, as it should be. But for some reason, the removal of a network from a vApp, requires the entire vApp to be shut down. Ever since I’ve started working with vCloud Director, I’ve been asking VMware why that is (as it’s … Read more

Veeam PowerShell: Get Backup Job Storage Size

Veeam Backup & Replication has a pretty extensive PowerShell extension, added to the Veeam Backup & Replication Management server by default. You can do a lot of cool stuff with it, ranging from just getting information about backup jobs to configuring new backup jobs and restoring items.

One of the clouds that I helped get out of the fog machine, uses Veeam B&R as its backup solution. Works like a charm for multi tenant environment, using the Enterprise Manager. As the nature of the cloud is dynamic, which includes the billing, I had the pleasure of creating a link … Read more

VMware Samples Exchange goes into beta

When searching for scripts that relate to VMware (PowerCLI, Perl VILib, etc), you usually end up on a blog or a forum post somewhere, probably pointing towards GitHub for an example script. VMware themselves didn’t have a proper place for example scripts, like most vendors have in their developer centers. But an announcement on the VMware Community Podcast said that they are finally coming around to it and release a beta of the new VMware Samples Exchange.

The VMware Samples Exchange (SVE) is basically a gathering place for sample scripts for every day tasks you would need when working … Read more

Monitoring a Galera Database Cluster

and-now-for-something-completely-different
..and now for something completely different next to my usual virtual networking posts. 🙂

Having switched over to a Galera database clustering setup for some of my applications recently, I needed to be able to monitor the health of the database cluster and its nodes. My environment uses Opsview for monitoring, which is basically a nice wrapper around Nagios for configuration and reporting, so you can use regular Nagios scripts. While looking for an existing Nagios script for Galera, I only found scripts that did not monitor the vital variables of Galera and didn’t fit my needs. So I decided … Read more

The Future of Virtual Networking from VMworld – Part 2

Following up on my post The Future of Virtual Networking from VMworld – Part 1 (read that before starting this one), I’m going to continue rambling on about some of the awesome future networking ideas floating around during VMworld.

Disclaimer: this post is also based on public roadmap information divulged by VMware and can be subject to change. Also, some of this is my interpretation of the features.

Distributed Load Balancing

With traditional load balancing, network traffic goes through an appliance (physical or virtual) before it connects to the actual target (load balanced server). This is set up this way … Read more

The Future of Virtual Networking from VMworld – Part 1

VMworld Europe took place in Barcelona last week and my experience was mostly centered around NSX. A few technical sessions and a lot of meetings later, I have been given an insight into the future of virtual networking and it’s awesome! In a mini series (otherwise it’d be much too long and windy) of posts, I am going to discuss my interpretation on how this will look.

Disclaimer: this post is based on public roadmap information divulged by VMware (mostly the great mind Bruce Davie) and can be subject to change. Also, some of this is my interpretation of

  • vSphere.
  • VSAN.
  • NSX.
  • vRealize Operations.
  • vRealize Log Insight.
  • Site Recovery Manager.
  • vCloud Director.
  • VMware Integrated Openstack.

Architecture of vCloud NFV
