Cisco UCS Inventory Script

The UCS Inventory Script (UIS) is a tool written in Powershell (using the awesome Cisco Powertool plugin) which I’ve been using for a while in my job, gathering all the configuration data at the end of a build.

That way, I had a reference containing every detail of the UCS configuration to look back to. When an issue came around after we left, we could check back and see in what state we left UCS and if all the proper configuration was done.

Recently, I’ve started updating this script to include everything that I could think of and started adding … Read more

Disconnecting an active UCS KVM session

If you use UCS Manager, this has probably happened to you once or twice. Something happened on your UCS environment and you need to get KVM access to a few blades to get things working again. Then you discover one of your colleagues has left his desktop or terminal server session running with a KVM sessions open to the blades you need and you get a “Send sharing request?” dialog. Send all the sharing requests you want, that colleague is enjoying his weekend and won’t respond to them.

The way you can get around this is to reset the KVM … Read more

Installing Guacamole – HTML5 Remote Desktop

Guacamole is a gateway application described for HTML5 Clientless Remote Desktop, as I described in a previous post. I still use it daily and have not had any problems with it for the last 6 months.

Throughout the years, I’ve switched between a lot of desktop access methods (VNC, RDP, RDP over SSL-VPN, VMware View, etc, etc) and Guacamole is the only one I’ve managed to stick with for last 6 months and see myself sticking with for a very long time.

This post will go into the installation of Guacamole on a CentOS 6 Linux server. The following … Read more

Ultimate Cisco Nexus FCoE Configuration Guide

This post is part of my CCIE Datacenter reference series and will cover all there is to get FCoE up and running on the Cisco Nexus 7k, 5k and 2k switches.

The text assumes you have a understanding knowledge of fundamentals (storage paths, flogis, vPC, etc) and can be used as a configuration reference (I basically wrote this for myself).

Juniper SSG Double Dual Homed VPN

This is going to be a lengthy post, one I’ve been wanting to do for a while, since there is not much information out there on this type of setup.

First off, let me explain the title real quick. “Juniper SSG Double Dual Homed VPN” means that we have 2 sites, e.g. branch and a main office and that both sites have two different internet connections for failover. We want to create a VPN between these 2 sites. It will look like this:

ssg-double-dual-homed

Juniper SSG firewall devices could be a perfect fit for a branch connecting to a main facility/datacenter. … Read more

CCIE DC Progress Sheet

When working on a large project, I tend to make overview sheets for myself to track progress. My CCIE Datacenter project is no difference. I’ve been asked to share my CCIE Datacenter progress excel sheet a bunch of times now, so I figured I’d put it here: CCIE DC Progress Sheet

It has been put together with inspiration from other sheets and it assumes you have an INE subscription for their excellent videos.

VMware VXLAN Host Preparation: Add virtual NIC: Unknown error

During the implemention of a private cloud solution using vSphere and vCloud Director, there was the need to reinstall the ESXi hosts with a custom ISO. At that point the vSphere platform was already deployed, vShield Manager and vCloud Director were running and integrated with each other, and the VXLAN preparations (transport VLAN added, vmknics were deployed and active and the segment networks config) we’re already done. VXLAN Network deployment was working and the vShield Manager and vCloud Director were happy with the vSphere environment.

After the ESXi host reinstall, it got its Host Profile back and was added … Read more
